urban visions
New York City, a global hub for art, culture, fashion, and finance, boasts an iconic skyline, renowned museums, a world-class theater district, and iconic structures and events that draw visitors from all corners of the globe. This city has been a haven, muse, and subject to some of the most celebrated photographers of the 20th and early 21st centuries, including Alfred Stieglitz, Bernice Abbott, Paul Strand, Diane Arbus, Bill Cunningham, Garry Winogrand, Robert Mapplethorpe, Richard Avedon, William Klein, and Phil Penman, to name just a few.
New York City is a city of constant transformation, perpetually under construction, building upon itself, and reinventing itself. A charged atmosphere permeates many parts of the city, and it truly lives up to its moniker as “the city that never sleeps.” With five distinct boroughs, each with its own rich history and character, and a population approaching 9 million, New York City is a photographer’s paradise, catering to all genres.
When we visit New York for a few days to see a specific museum exhibit or immerse ourselves in theater, music, or a combination thereof, I always carry my camera. Growing up on the West Coast, my knowledge of New York was limited to a few business trips or a weekend in the “Big Apple.” However, now that I reside just a few hours’ train ride away, I’ve had the opportunity to explore the city more deeply, and my understanding and vision of New York has further developed. These are just a few of the images I’ve captured during our visits.
I eagerly anticipate my next trip to this vibrant city!
