New York Diary – Day Four

Finally, a day with a little break in the overcast and periodically some sun!

I took the A express train (subway) downtown to the Fulton Street station and to work my way to the southern end of Manhattan—the Battery and Staten Island Ferry building. That did not happen. After a few blocks, I began to feel lightheaded and nauseous. I quickly got back on the A train headed uptown and back to the apartment. I just laid back on the couch, and boom, I was asleep. I am not sure what was going on. Damn, this getting old sucks!

I woke refreshed, had a small snack, and headed out again. I got off the train midtown at 34th Street/Penn Station and started walking back uptown. It was cool and breezy, but I made some fun images and walked just over three miles, winding back and forth to catch Times Square, Rockefeller Center, St. Patrick's Cathedral, up through Central Park and caught the A train uptown back to the apartment.

It felt great to be out and about. As I wrote above, I made some images that I would call fun, but none that were great or even good; I could have done better. I need to balance just shooting away and being more deliberative and intentional. I suspect my resistance to shooing away is partially a legacy from my analog days when each shot had a cost. In digital, that is not something to worry about.

I must keep working to get my vision and mind's eye back to a higher level, and an essential part of that process is practice, practice and more practice, another way of saying “just shoot away!”
