Day 2

The city is waking up. Across the street, the birds are singing, and the early dog walkers are out. It looks like another overcast day — ah, early spring in New York. Yesterday was mostly cloudy, with a few moments of sunshine intermixed with periodic drizzle, so it was not a great day for making images between locations I visited and the flat light. However, unlike previous visits to the city, the focus of this trip is not photography. My focus is on walking and visiting locations I have not previously been to or spent much time in.

I walked a total of 7.3 miles yesterday over several segments. I started in Central Park, taking as many side paths and loops as possible. The park was packed with tourists. There were large groups of walkers and bicyclists, each with similar colored clothing, usually a t-shirt or vest for the walkers and color-coordinated helmets for the bicyclists. When these groups stopped to listen to their tour guide or visit a particular location, getting around them or close to something you might want to make an image of was challenging. I walked just over 4 miles in the park and made a few images of tulips - yup, just flower photos!

I jumped on the subway at Columbus Circle, headed down to the East Village Bookstore, and bought the book I had seen yesterday. I had a food truck lunch in Tompkins Square Park and walked around the East Village area for a while. I did not make a single image on my walk around the area. I am unsure if it was the crowds, the flat light, or fatigue from my walking, but I did not see anything interesting to stop for. By the time I returned to the subway station to head back to the apartment, I had put in just over 3 miles, and I was tired but pleased with the number of miles I had put in.

My plan for today was to go to Coney Island and walk down the Coney Island Beach Boardwalk to Brighton and back, but that may wait for a day with better light. Today may be a day for museum and gallery visits.
