STRUCTURES
The structures we build reflect our ever-evolving knowledge and understanding of materials and physics. Their form and appearance express our sense of proportion and scale. Their design and construction are an attempt to bring order to chaos. Our structures can reflect in their appearance an intended purpose, but often their design, size, and grandeur are intended to make a statement. They are designed to reflect the culture, power and wealth, or sometimes faith and devotion of a culture or community. The scale and grandeur of a culture’s buildings often make a first impression on visitors. Often, that is the purpose of their design.
In our folly to leave a mark, to create an eternal echo in time, we pursue many forms of expression like literature, visual arts and architecture. Our structures are often the most permanent form of this endeavor, but in the end, all folly — chaos reigns supreme, overturns our efforts and leaves only ruins. It is folly, a form of hubris, to hope that our creations will somehow survive the ravages of time and be valued for their craft and creativity. Still, we create. I create.
